How gross becomes net in Hungary
Hungarian payroll is one of the simplest in Europe: two deductions come off the gross salary, both are flat percentages, and there is no contribution ceiling. The tricky part is the allowances and the order in which they apply, which is why two people on the same gross salary can take home amounts that differ by tens of thousands of forints.
What the employer deducts
The 18.5% social security contribution (társadalombiztosítási járulék, TB) is deducted as a single amount, but it is split between the pension fund (10%), health insurance (7%) and the labour-market fund (1.5%). The 15% personal income tax (személyi jövedelemadó, SZJA) is also charged on the full gross salary, with no tax-free band. Without allowances you therefore keep 66.5% of your gross pay. The employer withholds both amounts and pays them to the tax authority (NAV).
Allowances, in the order they apply
- Mothers' exemption: mothers under 30, mothers of four or more children and, subject to age limits, mothers of three children and, from 2026, of two children (for now those under 40) pay no SZJA on their wages.
- Under-25s: no SZJA on earnings up to 715,765 Ft a month (the July 2025 average wage); only the part above that is taxed.
- First-marriage allowance: 5,000 Ft less tax a month for the 24 months after the wedding.
- Family allowance: doubled from January 2026. It reduces the tax base by 133,340 Ft per child a month (one child), 266,660 Ft per child (two children) or 440,000 Ft per child (three or more), saving 20,000, 40,000 or 66,000 Ft per child. A child with a long-term illness or severe disability adds a further 133,340 Ft. If the SZJA runs out, the rest reduces the TB contribution (családi járulékkedvezmény).
Example: 750,000 Ft gross
Without allowances, 138,750 Ft TB contribution and 112,500 Ft SZJA are deducted, leaving a net salary of 498,750 Ft. The employer also pays 13% social contribution tax (szociális hozzájárulási adó) on top, so the total cost of the job is 847,500 Ft.
What the calculator does not cover
It does not include the personal allowance for employees with a severe disability, cafeteria benefits and the SZÉP card, or childcare benefits such as GYED. The 2026 minimum wage is 322,800 Ft (214,662 Ft net) and the guaranteed minimum wage for skilled jobs is 373,200 Ft.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the average Hungarian employee take home?
According to the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the average full-time gross wage was around 750,000 Ft in mid-2026 (754,700 Ft in June). A gross salary of 750,000 Ft means 498,750 Ft net without any allowances.
How do I calculate net pay from gross?
Without allowances: net = gross × 0.665, because 18.5% social security contribution (TB járulék) and 15% personal income tax (SZJA) are deducted from the gross salary. With allowances, the calculator above gives the exact figure.
What is the difference between gross and net salary?
Gross salary is your full pay before tax and contributions are deducted. Net salary is what you actually receive after the deductions.
How does the family tax allowance work?
The family allowance (családi kedvezmény) reduces your tax base. From 2026 it saves 20,000 Ft a month with one child, 40,000 Ft per child with two children and 66,000 Ft per child with three or more. If there is not enough income tax to absorb it, the remainder reduces the 18.5% social security contribution (családi járulékkedvezmény).
