How net pay is calculated in Serbia

In Serbia the employment contract states a gross salary; what reaches your bank account is the net amount left after the employer withholds contributions and tax and pays them to the Tax Administration (Poreska uprava) with an individual tax return (PPP-PD). Employees do not pay anything themselves.

Employee contributions: 19.9%

From gross pay, 14% goes to pension and disability insurance (PIO fund), 5.15% to health insurance (RFZO) and 0.75% to unemployment insurance (National Employment Service). The contribution base cannot be lower than 51,297 RSD or higher than 732,820 RSD a month. The minimum base is below the minimum wage, so for full-time work only the upper limit matters in practice: above it, contributions stop growing.

Salary tax: 10% with a non-taxable amount

The tax rate is a flat 10%, but it is not charged on the whole salary: the non-taxable amount of 34,221 RSD a month is deducted from gross pay and tax is calculated on the rest. Contributions are not deducted from the tax base. That is why the real tax burden is below 10% — around 8% for an average salary.

What the employer pays

On top of gross pay, the employer pays another 15.15% out of its own funds: 10% for pension insurance and 5.15% for health insurance. These contributions do not affect your net salary, but they make up the total cost of employment, the so-called “bruto 2”.

Example: 166,000 RSD gross

You receive 119,788 RSD. The employer also pays 25,149 RSD in contributions, so this salary costs it 191,149 RSD in total.

Minimum wage

The minimum wage (minimalna cena rada) is 371 RSD net per working hour. The monthly amount depends on the number of working hours in the month; for an average of 174 hours it comes to about 64,550 RSD net, or about 87,200 RSD gross.

What the calculator does not cover

The calculator works out a regular monthly salary for full-time work. It does not account for tax relief for hiring new employees or young founders, the proportionally lower base and non-taxable amount for part-time work, or the annual personal income tax (godišnji porez na dohodak građana) paid by the highest earners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average salary in Serbia?

According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS), the average gross salary for June 2026 was 166,123 RSD and the average net salary 120,401 RSD. For a gross salary of 166,000 RSD the calculator gives 119,788 RSD net.

How do I calculate net salary from gross?

Use the calculator above. In short: deduct 19.9% contributions from gross (on a base between 51,297 and 732,820 RSD) and 10% tax, which is charged on gross pay minus the non-taxable amount of 34,221 RSD.

Does the employer pay additional contributions?

Yes. The employer pays further contributions out of its own funds (pension 10% + health 5.15% = 15.15%), but they do not affect your net salary.

What is the non-taxable part of the salary?

The non-taxable amount (neoporezivi iznos) is 34,221 RSD a month (from 1 January 2026), on which no 10% tax is paid. Tax is only charged on the part of the gross salary above this amount.
